Gum Disease Impacts Your Heart Health

"We all think that cholesterol is important to heart disease. The health of your gums is a more important predictor of whether or not you will have a heart attack or not."

The LANAP® Procedure in Burley, ID

LANAP®

(Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure)

Basic Steps of the LANAP® Protocol

If you do not seek treatment for the early stages of gum disease, the disease can progress to advanced periodontitis. In this stage, bacteria have begun to destroy the connective tissues and bone holding your teeth in place. Any periodontal pockets that formed in the early stages can become deeper, and soon you might experience loose or shifting teeth. This is a very serious condition and we encourage patients to schedule an appointment with Dr. Ronald Rice for gum disease treatment as soon as possible. If you have reached the advanced periodontitis stage, you may need more aggressive treatment, such as laser gum surgery.

Dr. Rice offers the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®) for the treatment of gum disease. This advanced treatment not only eradicates bacteria, but can also save teeth that might otherwise need to be extracted. Here is a closer look at how LANAP® works:

1. Periodontal Pocket Measurement - Dr. Rice will need to determine how much gum to tooth attachment loss has occurred. He will do this by measuring the depth of your peridontal pockets using a small ruler.

2. Removal of Bacteria - Dr. Rice will use the pulsed laser light from the PerioLase® MVP-7™ to remove bacteria beneath the gum line and destroy any infected gum tissue. The laser only affects unhealthy tissue and healthy tissue is left untouched. Most patients experience minimal or no discomfort as a result.

3. Removal of Calculus - Dr. Rice will use an ultrasonic scaler to remove any calculus (tartar) deposits that may have formed under the gum line. The use of this instrument is necessary because the laser alone cannot eliminate calculus.

4. Clotting Process Stimulation - The laser is passed over the treated area again to get rid of any remaining bacteria and also to stimulate the clotting process. As your blood forms a sticky seal around the periodontal pockets, new germs will not be able to enter the area. This helps to promote the body’s healing process.

5. Tissue Compression - The tissue recompresses against the root surfaces of the teeth without any stitches required.

6. Bite Adjustment - Dr. Rice will adjust your bite to correct any occlusal (chewing surface) trauma that may have occurred.
